AE System consists of Brindsley and Sarah Archer, both having degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Brindsley has been doing electronic and firmware development since he was 14 years old. This commenced with him designing a single board computer in 1982 based on the 6502 processor and software development on his trusty Apple II computer. The PCB's in those days were forged from any means possible - using transfers, etch resistant pen, insulation tape, etc. Thankfully these days more advanced tools such as Altium are used to develop PCB's. The firmware was literally written in machine code and burned into a UV erasable EEPROM. You made sure you got the code right first time in those days! This hard gained experience all makes for a more thorough designer today. Brindsley has spent most of his working life developing hardware and firmware in the field of radio (mainly software defined), vibration analysis, power electronic control and digital signal processing.
Sarah started her working life configuring Alcatel telephone exchanges and providing customer support. She was later involved in the early roll out of the GSM cell phone network in South Africa. She has mainly been involved with software development, testing and support, but can also do PCB CAD work. More recently she has been assembling the initial prototypes of newly developed hardware. Just give her the schematics and a box of parts, and she will produce an error free board, complete with suggestions on design improvements!
This combination of design and prototype construction by knowledgeable people, results in very fast turn around and getting it right first time (well most of the time!). When skills are needed that are out of our realm of experience, we have good relationships with people who can provide these skills such as high level software development, mechanical housing development, PCB manufacturers and contract assembly outfits (for when those volumes start to really increase).
